It’s finally here!
The Donkeys are on their way to the North Coast….
This Saturday the Kiwanis Club of Astoria-Warrenton is presenting Donkey Basketball. 2 teams will square off and play a game of hoops…except they must ride donkeys to play. Should be a fun night for the whole family.
Tip off is 7pm at the Warrenton High School…and if some players don’t show, you will probably see me on one of those donkeys…
Tickets can be bought at the door or by calling Swede at 338-7400. They are also giving them away on KCRX.
All proceeds go to those in need throughout the community.
With 3 garage sales happening in the North Coast web world, it’s probably be coming a sore subject. But I’ll go ahead and do a update anyway.
Here is a few photos of the Pioneer House benefit sale. These were taken in the early afternoon on Thursday while we were setting up. This is probably only about 1/2 of the stuff we had, with lots more coming all the way up until Friday morning.
We ended up selling just over $1700 worth of stuff. About $450 of this is going back to our club. The proceeds from items that were donated by Astoria Kiwanis members and bought by Astoria Kiwanis members went back to our club. All the rest will be giving directly to the Pioneer House….
Not sure if we just had too much stuff, or the large amount of sales around town spread the shoppers too thin, but we still have about 75% of the donated items left at the shop on 39th.
Another sale is tentatively scheduled for the 23rd and 24th of June at the same location. We should have even more items and will be very motivated to sell everything we have.
Thanks all for your donations and purchases!
Yep, it’s that time of year again!
Every year on April Fools Day the Astoria-Warrenton Kiwanis, KAST and local businesses put on a special event known as “Radio Days”.
As if they were not generous enough before, KAST is offering Radio Days participants even more than years past.
Local Kiwanis members contact local businesses that are interested in donating charity dollars in exchange for advertising on the radio. The business can choose the number of ads and what they want the ad to say. In years past Kiwanis members themselves actually read them on the radio. We would take over a studio and read each one over a period of about 7 hours. As you might expect handing over the mic to a bunch radio amateurs and goofballs made for some rather interesting programming. This year though KAST is offering up their staff to do the ads. If this isn’t enough they are also going to play the ads on “The Eagle” – 103.9. In years past we were given the stations with a smaller listening audience, but this year the ads will be presented on one of the most popular to stations in the area, with thousands of listeners in Clatsop and Pacific counties.
Tom Freel did a short blurb about Radio Days a few weeks back on CoastWatch Blog:
By the way, just want to encourage you to listen to The Eagle 103.9 FM on April Fools day. We are(for the 20th year) hosting the Astoria Kiwanis Radio Day which means the club can sell our commercial inventory for that day and keep every bit of the money. If you are contacted by a member of the club over the next month to buy ads just keep in mind that the money is going to a great local organization and all they do to support those in need right here.
As our motto says “Serving the Children of the World”, this basically describes what we do. Over 95% of our fund raising dollars goes to kids and kids programs in Clatsop County. The other 5% is sent to kids and kids programs in other areas who suffer through major hardships such as Hurricane Katrina or the families of 9-11.
The cost per ad depends on the number bought. They become much cheaper the more you buy:
Each commercial can be up to 30 seconds long and at $14-$25 a piece, with virtually all funds going to local kids, it becomes a winning situation for all those involved.
In years past we accepted ads right up to 9am the morning before we read them on the air. This year we are on a tighter schedule since KAST must produce all the ads. So by next Friday, the 23rd of March, all ads and payments must be given to a local Kiwanis member so we can turn them in at the Radio Station. This event usually brings in about $4,000 for our Club. Although this is a very small number compared to the Tillamook Club, they raise $20,000 year after year. Surely we can beat a bunch of Cheesemakers!
For those who are interested in supporting Radio Days, please contact a local Kiwanian.

Thanks to all!
So you have been in the house for a while with all this rain coming down. It’s time to head down to the Middle School for some basketball fun.
The Harlem group is somewhat like the Harlem Globe-Trotters, but with a message for the local kids. The team has been touring local schools and talking to kids about the dangers of drugs and dropping out of school.
Tonight’s game will put them in a tightly contested match with the local teachers and I will be running the scoreboard…so it may seem like the Visitors are making more baskets, but the home team will be right in the game on the scoreboard !!
Game starts at 7pm at the Astoria Middle School.
Tickets are $8-10 at the door and all proceeds will go toward local programs.

I have spent the last 4 days at the Kiwanis PNW Convention. Our District includes Alaska, Western Canada, Washington, Oregon, and Northern California. so it was a rather large group. The Convention was a excellent learning experience and gave an very in-depth overview of how the Organization is run. Another good learning experience involved staying in another coastal town for 4 days and comparing it with our neck of the woods…..
The following is a letter from Tracy Crews of ODFW
I am writing this letter to ask for your support for a very special project which will benefit thousands of youngsters in the years to come. I am sure you are all familiar with Camp Rilea as an Oregon National Guard facility located in Warrenton. Not only is it a place where National Guard members spend time readying for deployment, but it serves as a vacation spot for families of actively deployed military personnel. It is also the site of numerous youth camps. One very special camp is Camp Rosenbaum, a unique citizenship camp for “at risk” youth from the Portland and Salem metro areas, run annually by volunteers from the Oregon National Guard, numerous police and fire departments, and various housing authorities.Probably very few outside of Kiwanis know about builders club. “Builders Club, what the…?”.
Builders Club is a Kiwanis Service Club at Warrenton Grade school that raises money for other kids in need. One of their major fundraising events is family movie night at Warrenton Grade School.
More about why they started this event in Full Article Land…..
The Astoria-Warrenton Kiwanis will be infiltrating the KAST building.
For the past 4 weeks we have been visiting businesses for donations in exchange for advertising on ESPN.
More on the flip….
