Fifty-three years ago, when newly elected Dwight Eisenhower moved into the White House, America’s southern frontier was as porous as a spaghetti sieve. As many as 3 million illegal migrants had walked and waded northward over a period of several years for jobs in California, Arizona, Texas, and points beyond.
President Eisenhower cut off this illegal traffic. He did it quickly and decisively with only 1,075 United States Border Patrol agents – less than one-tenth of today’s force. The operation is still highly praised among veterans of the Border Patrol…..
It was discovered that, in wholesale lots, the Mexicans could be shipped to Mexico City for $14.70 per capita. This sum represented less than the cost of a week’s board and lodging. And so, about February, 1931, the first trainload was dispatched, and shipments at the rate of about one a month have continued ever since. A shipment, consisting of three special trains, left Los Angeles on December 8. The loading commenced at about six o’clock in the morning and continued for hours.
The rhetoric has been in high gear for the last week. I have never heard so many people on the street speak hatred for illegals. And that is what they are, illegal citizens. But how many of us are illegal?
How many of us abuse prescription drugs? How many drive drunk? Speed? Get drunk before the age of 21? Not yield for a pedestrian?
How many of these laws are ignored on a regular basis by the authorities, unless a much worse crime is committed during the illegal activity?
Almost all of us do something illegal everyday. Just like an “alien” that is illegal everyday.
