Furry Freak Flees Flakes

by Staff

Thank-you, you cute little Sciuromorpha, six more weeks of winter!

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow shortly before 7:30 a.m. to the cheers of more than 30,000 people from as far away as Alaska and Texas, one of the largest crowds in the 122-year history of the event in the central Pennsylvania town of Punxsutawney.

A word of note, the Republican Party stripped 30 of the 60 delegates from the Michigan Primary. They were unhappy because of Michigan’s move of bumping their Primary up.

The Democrats stripped Michigan of all of the delegates. Hillary Clinton wins big, Obama and Edwards were not on the ballot.

News: Fees for Overweight Employees, DHS Street Cameras, Riches and more...

by Tryan Hartill

Being Overweight Might Cost You

ABC has an interesting write up on employers that are charging their overweight employees fees if they don’t slim down. Legal issues are pending related to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

In other health news, the U.S. has fallen to 42nd in life expectancy. Much of it is caused by high infant mortality rates compared to other countries and black males, who only live to an average age of 69.

How Rich are you?

A website called the Global Rich List will tell you how rich you are compared to the rest of the world. I am in the top 2%...Woo Hoo!

In other Rich news, the Wall Street Journal has an article up that ponders whether rich kids really have an advantage because many fail to learn how to manage money.

Smile! You’re on Camera

The Boston Globe is reporting that the Department of Homeland Security is spending big bucks on surveillance cameras:

The Department of Homeland Security is funneling millions of dollars to local governments nationwide for purchasing high-tech video camera networks, accelerating the rise of a “surveillance society” in which the sense of freedom that stems from being anonymous in public will be lost, privacy rights advocates warn…..a large number of new surveillance systems, costing at least tens and probably hundreds of millions of dollars, are being simultaneously installed around the country as part of homeland security grants. (Pssst one guy running for President would eliminate DHS)

Indecision ‘08

Karl Rove Resigns!

The Rocky Mountain Chronicle has an in depth story on the life of Rudy Giuliani. Along with my favorite Rudy quote:

“Freedom is not a concept in which people can do anything they want, be anything they can be. Freedom is about authority. Freedom is about the willingness of every single human being to cede to lawful authority a great deal of discretion about what you do.”

In other ‘08 news, Fox News reports on the Iowa Straw Poll. They give the results, but leave out the 4th and 5th place finishers and then continue on with 6th 7th and 8th. To bad for Tancredo and Paul.

Finally, Tommy Thompson has dropped out of the race.

Iowa Straw Poll Results: Romney Wins Big

by Tryan Hartill

Close to 14,000 votes were cast, which compared to previous years is a fairly low number. 23,685 votes were cast in 1999 and George Bush won the straw poll hands down. On a interesting note, one of the Diebold machines that counted the ballots malfunctioned (Surprising ey?) and the results were delayed 90 minutes in order to count them the old fashioned way.

Results:

1. Mitt Romney –32 %
2. Mike Huckabee – 18 %
3. Sam Brownback – 15 %
4. Tom Tancredo – 14 %
5. Ron Paul – 9 %
6. Tommy Thompson — 7 %
7. Fred Thompson – 1 percent
8. Rudolph W. Giuliani – 1 %
9. Duncan Hunter – 1 %
10. John McCain (less than 1)
11. John Cox (less than 1)

The poll means very little in the grand scheme of things, but it has become the first real test of each campaigns organizational strength. Mitt Romney poured the most money in this event and Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Fred Thompson all chose not to make an appearance.

The Boston Globe is reporting that Mitt spent 1-2 Million on the Straw poll:

Romney has outspent his straw poll opponents in Iowa to an almost comical degree, airing more than $1 million in radio and television ads in the state this year, mailing glossy brochures, placing thousands of phone calls, and paying dozens of local activists stipends of $500 to $1,000 a month to help build his organization [...]

Rival Republican campaigns have sought to raise turnout expectations for Romney while insinuating he is trying to buy the beauty contest; one circulated estimates yesterday that he could spend as much as $2 million on winning the straw poll. The Romney campaign said it had no estimate of its spending for the event.

Back in the NW (Yay!)

by Tryan Hartill

Finally back after my travels. In the last week I have been to Portland, Atlanta, San Antonio, Salt Lake City, and back to Portland. Then from Portland I took a trip to Bend. On the way I stopped in Hood River, The Dalles and Madras. (Don’t ask me why I was in The Dalles on the way to Bend, we’ll just say I took a “wrong turn” and leave it at that)
After staying in Bend for the weekend I drove back to A-town late last night.

San Antonio

As most of you know I spent 3 days in San Antonio at the 2007 Kiwanis convention. The Convention was great. There was lots of training and motivational speeches and lots of free stuff! I got to talk to all the big dogs in the Organization a give them some input.

The City of San Antonio was “less than spectacular” in my view. The strangest thing about the town is that locals can’t handle rain or even the threat of rain. The first 2 1/2 days I was there it was either raining or about to rain and the City was a total ghost town. Shops were either closed all day long, or if not they closed at 6 pm…even bars and restaurants. Another weird thing is that they really don’t celebrate the 4th of July. All of the brouhaha (flags, fireworks, parties etc etc) that we are used to were non-existent in San Antonio. It was just like any other day.

I had quite a few photos, but due to some camera issues many didn’t turn out. On Tuesday night I was trying to catch some lightning on film, so I had my camera settings all set for night photos. Then when I was out taking photos the next 2 days I didn’t realize it was still in the night mode….so most all of them turned out blurry.

One thing that San Antonio has “going for it” is the Riverwalk area. Now I know your picturing a pathway along some kind of river….but you would be wrong. What they call a “river” in San Antonio is really a 20 ft wide and 4 foot deep man-made sludge canal.

This picture is from Friday right before I left, the sun had come out that day and all of a sudden the town was full of people. The little boat thing you see are tour boats that float around town. There has to be 30 of these things flying around the canal. This was the only one that was empty, all the rest were packed with tourists.

The next photo is from a little further down the “River”. There was about a 100 little restaurants that appeared out of no where on Friday, but none of the photos I took of them turned out. When I had walked along the River earlier in the week I had no idea any of them were even there. Then the tables and chairs appeared out of thin air when the sun came out.

Never got a chance much of the “touristy stuff” like the Alamo due to time constraints and the weather closures. If you visit San Antonio, make sure it’s sunny and on a weekend. Also be sure to stay at one of the hotels along the Riverwalk. We stayed at the Holiday Inn-Riverwalk which was a nice Hotel. The Drake Hotel was next door and also looked like a nice place to stay.
