Inevitably there are two sides to every issue. No where does this hold more true than in the world of politics. Every main stream idea has 2 opinions. Whether it be health care, land use, recalls or the candidates themselves. And each side usually has at least 40% of the population agreeing with them at any given time. The rest is what I call the 20%ers. These are the folks that can never be sure one way or the other on any given issue. And really don’t totally make up their minds until they have to. Many times you will hear them be referred to as “flip-floppers” or “wishy-washy”. I admit that I am a 20%er. I don’t know how this came to be, or why, but I really can’t make up my mind on any given issue until I toss my ballot into the election box. Another 20%er is Tom Freel, although I have a feeling some of his “flip-flopping” has to do with enticing people to listen to his show….”stirring the pot” he calls it.
A while back I had this conversation with Oregon Guy. He used this analogy: Everyone is jumping on each side of the boat…..you think it’s going to tip over and move from side to side to make sure it doesn’t.At the start of every political issue with a “up or down vote” at the end, the 20% group is what every campaign should worry about. No matter how much time or effort is put into a given issue, 80% of the population already has their mind made up. The trick for any campaign is to convince a majority of the 20% group that your side is the right choice.
No where is this more glaring than the LNG issue. A poll was taken a while back on whether or not locals support LNG on the Columbia. The results were 42-40% in favor. This poll was taken about 2 years after the LNG issue first came up. The result of this poll shows that neither side really convinced anyone at all. If it was taken the day LNG was revealed to the public, chances are it would have been the exact same result.
In the near future we will have another issue ending in a “up or down vote” which involves Richard Lee. As of now it is about 40% in favor and 40% against recalling Mr. Lee.
Talking to some of the other 20%ers out there, they almost all lean toward voting no on the recall, as do I. The main reason is because there just isn’t enough “dirt”. All the reasons given are all issues that the voters took into account when they voted for Lee 20 months ago. We knew he had questionable land-use issues, we knew he would do anything in his power to welcome LNG, we knew he was against the D.A. and liked “studies” to put issues off for a while. We all knew it and still a majority voted for him. I didn’t like some of these back in 2006 and that is why I voted for Cindy Price. But as of now there is no way I am going to undermine the will of the voters on issues that even someone living in a cave knew were going to happen.
There very well may be “dirt” out there that will be revealed, in fact I’m hearing a whisper here and there about it almost daily. I could easily change my mind if a major issue came about that seriously undermined our County Government’s ability to function properly.
For the sake of CCFog members and supporters, and their ability to bring future issues to the voters, the dirt better come fast and furious, otherwise they are looking at a 60-40 defeat at the ballot box.

I don’t think it’s a dire as you make it out to be. The thing about this tactic is it only “fires up the troops” so many times.
In order for this to work you need major grassroots support to do all the grunt work. If they get little results they won’t even bother next time.
In order to report your neighbor, ex or cousin, something better come out of it or you feel like an ass and will look like an ass to those close to you. Anonymous dirt boxes would never work because the entries would be so watered down that no amount of resources could ever investigate each one. In the same token, if you feel strongly about this, just post a 100 "anonymous dirt" comments over at CCFog and the whole thing collapses.
If someone has some truly verifiable "dirt" and it is shown to the public and someone pays dearly for it, then justice is served.
There is a check and balance to this that I think you are ignoring.

not ignoring it, don’t see it. am oblivious in its ability to function. i read the gossip in the daily astorian that passes for news. i get that their next stories will be coming from those dirt boxes.
how will those close to me know if i reported something anonymously?

Do you honestly think this is the way for justice to be served? if someone put out a “got dirt” on anyone of us, and 20,000 (or even one tenth of that) people were focused on looking for our dirt, how clean would any one us be? how much of what we do could be twisted by the paper? verifiable dirt? you really think that is what they are going for? is that what you read when gamm writes? verifiable shit?
those got dirt boxes would be treasure troves for anyone who would just file names away until needed. read history.
In order for this to work you need major grassroots support to do all the grunt work. Think about what you are saying there. What, exactly is this “grunt” work? Spying? Checking up on each “tip”? Listening in on conversations?
that’s what is freaking me out about this campaign. I don’t know if Lee made a mistake. God knows I’ve made a few zillion. but the idea that a recall is being done FIRST and then “GOT DIRT” is being asked for is vile. Either you have the dirt and its the reason you are recalling the man, or you don’t and you should have waited until you did.
Justice being served? Now you are totally being naive. Sorry, god love you and you know I do but this has nothing to do with justice.

Tryan, while the situation may not exactly be “dire”, I don’t believe you should underestimate the potentially devastating effect of being the victim of this kind of witchhunt. Particularly when the only newspaper in town will portray any anonymously reported and unsubstantiated “dirt” as fact.
This is not about Richard Lee’s real or perceived wrongdoings. This is about Marquis obtaining by foul means what he could not obtain by fair – to wit, a seat for his wife on the County Commission. I am curious. Knowing what you know now, would you still have voted for Cindy Price?

My reference was to a 17th century writer, the 1st Marquis of Halifax, George Saville. Fifty years later, this reference—trimmer—was used to describe someone who would lurch from side to side in attempt to right the keel of state. No doubt believing in one’s own sense of infallability, this constant lurching would actually result in losing the keel, altogether. I believe the writer in the latter case was Jonathan Swift. But nobody reads him anymore.
..
Thanks for the nod.

Well I don’t recall you telling me that part..maybe you just didn’t want to hurt my feelings :-)
You are asking about Lee vs. Price again?
If so I would probably vote Lee, but I’m hearing there maybe some major crap working it’s way to the surface and it really depends on what is revealed.

Why not start recalls on everyone in office right now and put out the “GOT DIRT” boxes? I mean, isn’t it ridiculous to wait for a crime to actually be committed? That would be, will, democratic. Its smarter, and lets face it, quicker and more lucrative, to set the climate first, prime people to go looking for dirt, and then tell people to dig it up and get it off their chests.
Employers should watch and see how well that works on Lee. If it turns out good they can put these boxes up in the work place so everyone can use them to get stuff off their chest about what they know the other people at work are doing. Who took home a ream of paper to their kid for a school project? Who broke the case of eggs on night shift and didn’t report it? You wanted to report it and now, the employer can make it completely anonymous so you can! GOT DIRT boxes can go up all over town. Report your neighbor, you know you want to! Report your ex, you KNOW you want to. Your cousin, the ass? Report him!
That way we can always be one step ahead of yanking the rug out from under anyone’s foot that dares try anything new, innovative, or just dares to make a decision at all and we’ll know the gossip and low down shit on everyone. We’ll be so busy sifting through the shit everyone turns in on each other nothing else will get done, and every person in public office will be so terrified of making a mistake they’ll quit taking any steps at all. Hot damn. This will be a great community to live in then.
