Well the time has come for me to look for a new digital camera. My old one got in a fight with the Seaside High School Gym floor. It was great for taking pictures of scenes, but if anything was moving, or even slightly moving in low light, you might as well forget it. I’m leaning toward the Canon EOS 300D. I have yet to find anyone unhappy with it online. The only complaint out there is that it takes 3 seconds from being off to be able to take a picture. Which this is still a vast improvement form my old one.
This Canon is fairly old, produced mainly in 2004, but you can’t beat the prices on used ones. If anyone has any other suggestions for a SLR Digital Camera, please leave in the comments so I can check some others out.
Ever since the first Daily Astorian article came out, I have wondered where they got the picture of Richard Lee for the story. In that photo he looks like he just woke up after drinking a 1/5th of whiskey. So I did some searching today. First I went to the County website to have a look and I found this photo:
Then went back to the Daily A story and realized it’s the exact same picture!.....except someone doctored it using photoshop.
I can’t copy it for copyright reasons, but go and have a look.
He was charged with 2 counts of homicide….could of fooled me!

TH, the doctored news photo is now a news story so feel free to copy and publish. It exposes the Daily Astorian for altering an image in an attempt to editorialize.

Well they could have used my Boss Hogg Picture….at least that would be somewhat amusing!
BTW Patrick, if RL is recalled, who do you think would be a good person for the Commission to appoint till 2010?
Clearly obvious the current photo of Lee does not present him in his best light but, he has a handsome enough countenance, so no harm there.
Who to replace Lee? Not my district and I’m trying to sort out who would be the choice in my own district for Patrick’s seat, whether it be him or somebody else. You know Sam’s conduct has not been exactly stellar either.
Hell, that’s your bailywick anyway.
Who would you select?
Why would you not be a candidate for his replacement?

Well with this website thing going I would have to shut it down if I was on the Commission….this is at a time when I’m finally turning a corner as far as visitors go.
Just being on the APC caused me to debate whether I should of posted that Downed Timber article a few weeks back. I believe that is the only story I have written about the City Government.
And I see what the 5 Commissioners must go through everyday….trust me I don’t want to be in their shoes.
It looks to be Westbrook vs. Johnson in #4.

C’mon please throw your hat in the ring Patrick. The thing about tinfoil, if it gets stepped all over, you can smooth it back out and put it on. We need somebody that knows about public etiquette. what’s wrong with those Demo’s. Everybody knows when giving the finger in public it has to go up the nose and wiggled around. then there is no problems. Maybe Sam had a problem before, heard that pea in there got caught on his fingernail.
Kind of embarrassing for him.10 On Jan 27, 09:57 pm, Me wrote:
How about appointing Nancy Harbour?
I’ll help her move. Hell, it’d be fun to watch the train wreck that would follow.

Tryan, which camera is good for you depends on how it’s going to be used, what your final use will be and your budget. Photographing action in low light will depend more on the lens than which body it’s attached to. If you go for a Canon, either the 300D you mentioned or maybe a 10D or 20D, you might get the extra grip which gives you an extra shutter button for shooting verticals and an extra battery for longer use. Feel free to send me an e-mail and I can advise you on how to part with your money. ;)
On the R. Lee photo-I’ve noticed a lot of the Daily A’s photos look a bit washed out and contrasty online. I suspect what they do is adjust them for print use so they don’t look like mud in the hard copy and then use the adjusted version online without considering how they will look there.

RE Camera
My budget is probably in the $225 range. I mainly will use it for low-light and florescent light photos….and in some cases they will be action shots. I will still use it for outdoor scenes….but I figure basically any camera will be able to do that.
After looking around today I came across the 300d and most have a EF-S 18-55 mm lens and are about $250. The 10D looks very similar, but is almost twice as much for some reason. But I am pretty much a novice, so if you have a better suggestion I’m ready to change to something else.
RE Lee
I guess that would make sense…but I had no idea that photos had to be changed to be printed. All of the print work I’ve ever done (Mainly posters/fliers/newsletters for work) we would change some of the pixel settings, but never the other things like contrast or color because we wanted them to look as real and clear as possible.

It’s hard to beat that price. I’m used to paying more than that for film cameras or most lenses.
One suggestion I would make is to add a little to your budget and pick up a 50mm F/1.8 lens, also known as the ‘nifty 50.’ It would allow you do more in low light and it’s less than $100—about $80 if you shop around. Right now Adorama Camera has it for $79.95 with free shipping through Amazon.com. LINK

Interesting you should ask, because we recently got a digital SLR after much teeth-gnashing and comparison shopping.
I had shot with a Canon F-1 in highs school and loved it. I shot with a Minolta X-700 for a decade after that, and purchased lenses. On a whim, SH got me a Canon Eos Rebel, which I didn’t like particularly. So, we purchased a Maxxum because it fit our Minolta lenses, and added a few more.
By the time we were looking for a digital SLR, Minolta no longer existed. However, they had been purchased by Konica, which was then purcahsed by Sony. Ergo our Minolta manual SLR lenses fit on our new Sony digital SLR!
And I LOVE this camera. The best price was through Circuit City, and we bought only the body, since we didn’t need the lens, we already had one just like it. It takes amazing photos, and I’ve used it for both studio work and outdoors.
That being said, my father-in-law is a Nikon man. A friend of mine is a Canon girl. It all has to do with how the camera feels to you. I just prefer Minolta.
Oh, the body was around $700. We also bought an extra large card for it, and can take tons of photos on it. The batteries are rechargeable and killer!
Good luck!
