Lady Gulls Give Fish First Cowapa Loss

by Tryan Hartill

In a classic battle of power versus speed, the Astoria Lady Fishermen made the trip to Seaside to square off against the Gulls.
With both Astoria and Seaside ranked in the top 10, over 400 people packed into the Seaside gym in a playoff-type atmosphere where even the JV game had plenty of chanting and cheering. (The Seagulls won the JV game in a 39-37 barn-burner)

From the opening tip till the end of the 1st quarter buzzer, the game played right into the Lady Fish. They brought the ball up the floor and pounded it into K.J. Carr and Jamie Coggins. The Seagulls on the other hand looked a bit confused on offense and didn’t get up a shot until 2 minutes into the first quarter. The Fish put up almost twice as many shots in the first quarter, but the Gulls were able to stay close and were only down two after 1. Near the end of the first quarter Jamie Coggins committed 2 fouls and this kept her from playing the second quarter.

Neither team could find the hoop through the first 3 minutes of the second quarter and Seaside started to use their speed to trap and force turnovers. Eventually this paid off with Seaside scoring fast break points while Astoria couldn’t find the bottom of the net and looked noticeably tired during the final minutes of the first half. The Gulls went into the locker room leading 22-13.

The Fish came out in the second half looking to get Carr and Coggins going again and were able to pull within 7 with 4 minutes left in the 3rd at 20-27. Marla Olstedt for Seaside, who finished with a game high 22, then responded with points of her own and Seaside took a 38-27 lead into the final period.

At the start of the 4th, the Fish were able to get the ball inside again, forcing Seaside to foul almost every Astoria possession, but the fish couldn’t convert enough free-throws to catch the Gulls. 2 minutes into the 4th quarter the Lady Fish were still within 8 points at 42-34. With crisp passing and beating the Astoria Guards off the dribble, the Gulls were able to get up 5-8 ft jumpers nearly every time down the floor during the final minutes of the 4th quarter. They were able to outscore the Fish 18-9 over the last 6 minutes and won 60-43.

Notes:

Leading scorers for Seaside were Marla Olstedt with 22, Meagen Potter with 15 and Alix Richardson with 8. K.J Carr scored 14 for the Fish, Jamie Coggins had 12 and her younger sister Elizabeth had 8.

The loss was Astoria’s first in Cowapa play, and their first since December 22nd when they also lost to the Gulls in their Holiday Tournament.

The win puts Seaside at 4-1 and they are now tied with Astoria for the Cowapa lead.

Astoria plays at Knappa next Thursday and at Battleground next Friday. They then host Scappoose on the 5th of February. Seaside next plays Tillamook at home on February 5th.
