Local Youth Well Represented at Ron Wyden Meeting

by Tryan Hartill

Note to readers…all links in this article will give you a 1-3 minute audio clip about the subject being discussed….ex. the first link is “in the middle schools”...if you click, it will play the quote

From the moment Ron Wyden arrived at Seaside City Hall on Friday afternoon he noticed something different about the citizens in attendance. The average age of the 200 or so that came was under 30.

Extra Credit Draws Students

Dana McMakin, the 8th Grade English Teacher at Astoria Middle School, offered all of her students extra credit to attend the meeting and about 50 showed up. One of the students commented that she hopes this will take her English Grade from a B to an A. NCO asked McMakin how she knew who was there and who wasn’t. “I have 37 names written down here, but I know I’m missing some, there has to be over 50 here from my classes”.

Four 8th Graders also asked Wyden questions, including the first question of the night, how to slow junk food consumption in the middle schools.

Immigration was also a topic on the minds of the students. One commented to Wyden that he has friends that are here illegally and asked if there was a plan to deal with this issue. Wyden explained the 3 prong approach that he is pushing in the Senate.

College Students Show as Well

Many college students also came to Seaside City Hall and listened to Wyden speak. One was back home at Winter Break and attended Willamette University. She asked if anything was being done to lower the cost of college tuition.

Wyden “Congress just passed a law that took financial institutions out of the role of being the middle-man…..they were skimming of the top…..and there was less money available to students”. Wyden also commented that the Iraq War is taking much of the funding that would go to College Grant programs.

Another College Student asked about National Heritage areas and what they will mean to us.

Wyden “On January 22 there will be a effort in the Senate to bring up National Heritage Areas….it has already passed in the House”.

Power and Storm

One 8th Grader prodded Wyden about the storm and simply asked “How are you going to make it so the power doesn’t go out”?

Wyden also addresses this similar issue in another question.

Betsy Johnson was also in attendance and Wyden gave her a chance to address the Power outage issue.

Johnson “An initiative is being championed by the Governor called OWIN…..it would connect 4 State Agencies…..OSP, State Forestry, Dept of Corrections and ODOT…initial price tag approaches $650 Million”.

Would like some reader feedback…

This is the first time I have done an article like this and I would like to know if you like this style of article or not. (Hopefully not because this took WAY too long to put together :-)

I think Wyden is an Idiot, his only solution to the problems is more government, but the article is fine.

Wyden is pretty far to the left. But not nearly as far as some. His Health Care Bill is fairly middle of the road and he has some upset because he is not pushing Universal Healthcare. And he repeatedly said that he wants a balanced budget before spending more. I guess my view is, the ones on the left want to spend more money and have a bigger Government and the ones on the right want to….......spend more money and have a bigger Government. They just disagree on where to get it and where to spend it….tax-payers and this country’s youth lose either way.

I love it. I think YOU should edit all the stories that come in to look like this. (ouch, quit pinching)
