Associated Press – KGW News
COOS BAY, Ore.—Opponents of a proposed liquefied natural gas import terminal at Coos Bay say they will challenge local approval of an application to build the facility.
Medford lawyer David Lohman said the appeal follows the Coos Bay Board of Commissioners’ approval of a proposal to build the Jordan Cove project on Coos Bay’s north spit.
The project is one of three in various stages of planning in Oregon. The other two are on the lower Columbia River.
The next step is for Coos County to supply the state land Use Board of Appeals with a record of its land use decision by January 16.
The final decision will be made by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission which could come as soon as late this year.
Opponents of the terminals question their safety, their impact on other shipping and whether the terminals are even necessary.
The proposed Bradwood Landing facility below Saint Helens is the furthest along in the application process.
