So far today, I have had a banner day in terms of hits and visits. I am over 900 visitors for the day with an hour left and 2400 hits. I am not sure if I will ever reach those numbers again….the “stars” aligned just right over the last 24 hours.
I am still getting Google hits from people wanting to see storm pictures. I received about 450 visitors from the Oregonian. And everyone locally is finally getting their internet back after the storm.
In the next few weeks NCO will be getting a makeover. So I’m trying to figure out exactly what changes North Coast web users want in a local website.
The “Gray box” news bar is one I’m trying to figure out at the moment. I can’t seem to find a stat counter that records how many people read the articles I post in the box. It isn’t a lot of work for me to do it, but is it worth it?
Basically I made up my own “Search Engine” with Google. I receive about 30 Article titles an hour in my Google Account. Every 3 hours or so I check my “News Box”. Only about 3 out of 30 look interesting enough to read and out of those I tag maybe 1 to show up on my site. I try to post articles that relate in someway to Oregon or the North Coast. And every once in a while I will come across an article that has nothing to do with Oregon, but I think is interesting enough to post. The articles are sent to me the minute they are posted on the web. This is both good and bad. Good because I can always have freshly posted articles, bad because over half the articles are repeats and it’s a lot more to sift through. They first get posted on the published site, then an hour or so later other news sites pick them up and post them. The one article that is by far the most popular is the Editor’s Note by the Daily Astorian that talked about how they got the news out while the storm hit. That article had to be posted by at least 200 other news sites.
This will still be a work in progress along with many other changes I have planned before the first of the year. For now I am expanding it to 10 items at a time because lately we have been in the news an awful lot and they are recycling through too fast.
If you have any other suggestions, or changes you would like to see, please post them in the comments or let me know over the next week or so and I will try to tie them into the upgrade.

Could you link to the AP/whatever wire? Then you wouldn’t get “double hits”.
