Close to 14,000 votes were cast, which compared to previous years is a fairly low number. 23,685 votes were cast in 1999 and George Bush won the straw poll hands down. On a interesting note, one of the Diebold machines that counted the ballots malfunctioned (Surprising ey?) and the results were delayed 90 minutes in order to count them the old fashioned way.
1. Mitt Romney –32 %
2. Mike Huckabee – 18 %
3. Sam Brownback – 15 %
4. Tom Tancredo – 14 %
5. Ron Paul – 9 %
6. Tommy Thompson — 7 %
7. Fred Thompson – 1 percent
8. Rudolph W. Giuliani – 1 %
9. Duncan Hunter – 1 %
10. John McCain (less than 1)
11. John Cox (less than 1)
The poll means very little in the grand scheme of things, but it has become the first real test of each campaigns organizational strength. Mitt Romney poured the most money in this event and Rudy Giuliani, John McCain and Fred Thompson all chose not to make an appearance.
The Boston Globe is reporting that Mitt spent 1-2 Million on the Straw poll:
Romney has outspent his straw poll opponents in Iowa to an almost comical degree, airing more than $1 million in radio and television ads in the state this year, mailing glossy brochures, placing thousands of phone calls, and paying dozens of local activists stipends of $500 to $1,000 a month to help build his organization [...]
Rival Republican campaigns have sought to raise turnout expectations for Romney while insinuating he is trying to buy the beauty contest; one circulated estimates yesterday that he could spend as much as $2 million on winning the straw poll. The Romney campaign said it had no estimate of its spending for the event.

You have to remember, Ron only spent one week in Iowa and that was this past week. All the other candidates that finished ahead of him has been in Iowa for over a month. Getting 9% is actually good when considering the polls show him in the 1 to 2 point range in Iowa.

Oh boy…Right about now we need a president the rest of the world can get behind. and I’m afraid if his first name is Mitt, it isn’t gonna happen.
And yes, I’m a democrat, and that name isn’t Hillary either in my opinion.

I watched it on CSPAN up until Ron Pail spoke. Romney was polished and positive. The next three were angry old men. Cox did have a hot wife. What is it with these old republicans with they young wives.
Each of them went on and on about being Christian, and I knew that Ron Paul wouldn’t, but then he went on for several minutes about overturning Roe v. Wade.
It’s funny how it will end up. Everybody wants change, but you’ll never see a campaign of Paul v. Kucinich. It will probably be Romney v. Clinton. How boring…

I don’t think it much matters who wins the Republican nomination. Although I do think Giuliani would have a better chance of beating Hillary Clinton. I’m with you guys, I’d rather see Edwards, Obama, Kucinich – almost anybody rather than Clinton. Unfortunately, with our May primary, we probably won’t get much input here in Oregon.

These results are a bit disappointing for me. I hoped Ron Paul would have finished 2nd after reading the Buzz all over the internet.
