Time to go sign the Petition

by Tryan Hartill

Update

Independent DA Committee gathers over 2800 signatures.

After a good number are deemed invalid by the Elections office, it still looks like they have gathered more than double the number of valid signatures required.

******************************************

It appears that the signature team is falling a bit behind gathering enough people to sign the petition. According to the Daily Astorian they have collected about 800 as of 8am this morning.

As Tom Freel mentioned this morning on CoastWatch, he supports getting the petition on the ballot, but will vote no for the petition itself. I agree completely. And would recommend heading down to sign up before 3pm today.

They shot their wad and it wasnt enough. They erroneously overestimated the amount of affection Marquis’ constituency has for him. The people are sick to death of Marquis and his little clatter of syncophants screaming bloody murder over what they mistakingly think was shabby treatment of him. Fact of the matter is his getting his stipend yanked was a wake up call to him to shit or get off the pot.

I wonder how many permanent residents of Ocean View and Greenwood cemetaries miraculously got their names on the holy documents?

I signed the petition, yes…but also so that if appears on the ballot I can vote “no”.
Maybe it’s time the State revises it’s pay standards? Seems to me the County shouldn’t have to have budget for the STATE employees.

If that’s how you felt all along Tryan, why would you wait until the last couple of hours of signature gathering to encourage your NCO audience to sign the petition? Why would you not have been on it from the start?

I read the Daily Astorian article that said they only had about 800 signatures.

Why would you not have been on it from the start?

The “political breeze” was telling me they might not gather enough and I wanted to make sure it’s on the Nov. ballot, the sooner we get over this crap the better.

I agree. This has taken far too much time and resources. I am frustrated that people are obsessed with this, but nothing gets done with the little girl living in squalor around the corner here, or how many people have irresponsibly allowed their cats to breed yet again this year, or that blight of a building on eighth or how the Flavel blocks downtown are a horrible representation of the city or…or…or…

I just wish we could get these people to work half as hard on something that would truly improve Astoria.

Common Sense Question #1:

If I had a website with lots of local readers, and I REALLY wanted a petition drive to be successful, and make the Nov. ballot, as soon as I found it could be signed, I would:

A) announce where the petition can be signed as soon as I know it, on the first day of the petition drive.

B) wait until the second day of the petition gathering to announce it.

C) wait until the last day to announce, close to noon, when it’s almost too late to sign the petition.

It’s bad enough being a biased citizen journalist, Tryan, don’t be disingeuous too…

I did on Sunday. When the independentda site had the locations up, I had a link to it. The Daily Astorian did the exact same thing, gave a link without listing all the places to sign. And obviously they want it on the ballot.

C) wait until the last day to announce, close to noon, when it’s almost too late to sign the petition.

As soon as I read the Daily Astorian article (it had to be up only minutes) I thought “oh crap this might not make it”.

Do you want names of people that I have spoken to about this issue and told them I want it on the ballot….even before Nick Z challenged it?

Why do you keep reading here if everything is so biased?

Tryan, just some advice, but I wouldnt even engage with this Scott guy anymore. By responding to him, it just fuels his odd lust he has for poking at you.

Though as I have been observing over this past week, you do well in your responses to whoever this guy is. For some reason he likes to try to pick on you and your website. Does anyone know why? What’s his beef with you anyway?

Carson,

“Doing well” in a response to a question does not necessarily equal “being sincere.”

Tryan knows what I’m talking about, although he’ll not admit it.

But don’t worry – I’m done. Probably the reason I felt I had to have my final say here is that I had the highest hopes for Mr. Hartill until just the past couple of weeks.

Feel free to remove all links to my sites TH, I won’t be back. I wish you all the best in future political endeavors – and in spite all of this I sincerely believe that it’s not too late for you to escape good-ol’-boyism if you really want to.

I am happy to talk again in a few weeks, once we’ve both cooled down. But not here anymore – never here.

Best Regards,

Scott Reuter

I’ve never been “more cooled down”. Just sitting here listening to Night Train next to the dog and going through my parade pictures and remembering the “Happy Parading Children” AKA living life….stuff that you call “distracting things”. If you call these distractions, I think this whole D.A. thing has totally consumed your life.

Too bad Scott has six unread blogs, he could have put them to good use rather than wasting electrons here. I don’t think he put anything about the petition on his blogs, yet he scolds Tryan. Josh is going to be very upset with you Scott. You could have done so much more, instead you were harassing Tryan. Josh respects Tryan, at least he has been very respectful of what Tryan writes, and here you are dissing him. Don’t be surprised if he and Cindy both give you the finger the next time your wife drives you home.

Bottom line, I still don’t see why the hell the county should pony up to pad a state employee’s pay. Let the state deal with it, and with him.

Supposedly, this petition isn’t about Josh Marquis, it is about the District Attorney’s position. As Scott Reuter has shown, though, as well as Don Haskell, this is directly connected to Josh Marquis and if you aren’t totally, completely and passionately, for him you are against him.

Repeatedly Tryan Hartill has said that he is for a stipend for the District Attorney, a position he has taken some flack for. Nothing as harassing or petty as what Scott has dished out here and on various other forums. Whereas Tryan has given little commentary and provided concrete, first hand, evidence for people to view and come to their own conclusions Scott has taken a page out of his friends’ book and written gross innuendos without a shred of evidence. Scott makes allusions that because of the DA’s position in the Democratic Party and Scott’s connection to the DA he can influence Tryan’s political career, otherwise Tryan will have to live with the “taint” of the Good Old Boy “ism” on him!

I think too many people know Tryan to fall for that twisted crap. Too many people know his integrity and admire him for his blunt honesty. Tryan’s biggest crime is he speaks his mind, but as he ages he has magnificently learned to temper that with learning when to speak and how to say it.

We do not see eye to eye on many issues, and sometimes that startles me, but overall that is what makes Clatsop County good. We do not have one mind set. We are learning how to listen to one another.

For those who feel the need to label me I do not “hate” the District Attorney. I detest the way he has distorted what his office does and how he gets more staff to prosecute non-cases while trying to frighten the population into believing without the extra staff person and property crimes would go unpunished and their safety would be in jeopardy. I detest the way he treats the other departments of the county. I detest the way he refuses to provide information when almost all other District Attorneys in Oregon, all those in counties using performance based budgeting, readily comply. I detest the way he talks about our cities, denigrates Astoria saying it uses its Municipal Court via the good old boy system and then turns around and does the same thing himself with his group. He denigrates the cities that didn’t sign on to his bill, instead of working with them he went right to the press to chastise them publicly. His actions are not those of a Community leader who cares about the community he lives in and wants it to cohesively overcome concerns as they arise.

To me when someone runs unopposed it does not mean that they are greatly admired it means political parties have refused to endorse anyone else and that people know it is suicide to run on their own. Josh Marquis is high up in the Democratic Party locally and is middle ground enough to flip to Republican any time he wants. Both political parties recognize this. I say this merely as a casual observer since I have never belonged to a political party and stay out of partisan politics completely.

As a human being, I really liked Cindy’s site when she was writing. For the first time I saw the human side of Josh. Whether it was a ploy or not, I enjoyed it and I liked the people she portrayed there. I think Josh Marquis, the individual, might be a sincere, dedicated to whatever he is going after, person. It is Josh Marquis’ actions as the District Attorney that I detest. I really don’t know the man and therefore am incapable, nor have any desire, of hating him.

I would like to see a list of Marquis supporters, then I want to make sure they are never called for jury duty in this county. Tell me there is no potential conflict of interest there.

I was thinking about that very thing.

If someone signed the petition and then was charged with a crime later, would it be a conflict for marquis to prosecute them being because they supported a pay raise for him or how about will they be able to be on a jury in front of him.

19 On Aug 10, 07:22 pm, Registered to Vote wrote:

You couldn’t prevent someone from being called as a juror. Bear in mind jury duty involves civil as well as criminal cases. During the voir dire process which takes place before a jury is seated, if I were a defense attorney I might be inclined to find out a potential juror’s opinion on Marquis and, if it less than neutral, challenge that person for cause. In any jury trial, each side gets a certain number (I can’t remember how many – it’s been along time since I was on jury duty) of peremptory challenges, so the defense could get rid of a person who might be “suspect” (forgive the pun).

Oh say it ain’t so! Does this mean there is a God? Lets see if the web board rule of thumb holds that those who make grandiose exits and pouty farewells never stay gone for very long, or in Scott’s case, long enough.

Oh well, you know what they say about the door hitting you in the Asssstor Column on your way out.
