Wanted: Place to Rent in Astoria

by Tryan Hartill

It is not a good time to be a renter in Astoria. My rent has been raised over 15% in the last 3 months. What’s worse is that new people have recently moved in around me and they are paying over 30% more than what I was paying just 3 months ago….and the Apts. are all exactly the same. So I have been looking for a place to move to for the last few weeks.

2 big problems I have. One is that I need to live in the Astoria City limits for my Commission stuff. 2nd I have a dog, although a dog the size of a cat, but apparently the size does not matter.

Because of these 2 things I can’t rent 95%+ of the places that are available.

So every time a place comes up for rent that I can possibly move into, I’m fighting it out with 20-30 other people, who are most likely in the same situation. I put in constant calls to potential landlords, but most will never answer the phone, and have NEVER called me back when I leave my information. In the case of the place I’m trying for right now, I’ve called at least 15 times without ever getting an answer or a call back, now the lady has left her phone off the hook for a day now.

So if anyone out there would like to help a guy out, I’m looking for a house/duplex/large apt. under $600 a month in the city limits and allows small dogs. (And under a mile from Downtown, but I can’t be that picky)

From what I’ve experienced, finding this would be like finding a needle in a haystack, but I might just get lucky. (And finding a place to rent is mostly luck these days)

Size does matter, and you missed out on the one I told you about, huh?

This is a matter that Oregon never cares to address: Affordable Housing. Here on the coast it is deplorable that affordable housing takes a back seat to the big developments and condos. As I have addressed this issue in my little berg the city council wishes I would go away. Not one of them wants to discuss housing for middle—lower class.
Good luck

I will ask around for you. Word of mouth is sometimes the best, though I did find my place just driving around one day.

If those damn Californians and midwesterners would leave and quit moving here things could get back to normal.

I think there is some truth behind what drama says. Although it not just any one group that wants to move here, just lots of people in general want to move here. This is looking like one of the problems with going the tourism route, more people visiting and more people wanting to stay.

I know what you mean, the Astoria Planning Commission is trying to bring the issue forward, but it seems like it stays on the “back-burner”. The truth is that those in power really have no reason to worry about it. They all own houses and they keep rising in value as long as the cost of housing keeps rising.

I even tried to get on the Housing Authority Board about a month ago, but it seems they didn’t like my application, can’t have any renters making housing decisions around these parts.

The problems with getting “low income” housing in this area are:

1 – Many existing properties require so much maintenance, that the owners/landlords can’t afford to make those repairs on the rents they would get as “low income” properties.

2 – Building new is so expensive, and it takes much longer to recoup your costs if you rent it out as “low income”.

3 – Let’s be honest. Many of the “low income” tenants do more damage to property, thus increasing the landlords repair costs.

Now here’s an idea. What about a Habitat-for-Humanity type condominium? Instead of just a single-family house? You invest so much “sweat equity” to own one of the units.

What people consider “low-income housing” is really mid to high right now. Prices now for the shittiest 1 bedroom Apts. in town is $550. But as weird as it may seem, 3 and 4 bedroom houses are only about $1200….

Basically the only way to bring some mid-priced housing to the area would be to open up more land for building. Which may happen by the end of the year, even though there will be a huge uproar from it.

Have you considered finding out how much of a mortgage you qualify for?
I mean when you rent all you have at the end of the month is a canceled check, where if you buy you have equity and a deduction for your interest. I’m just saying…

Walter, there art incentives for abiding low income housing..federal, state, and county. But there has to be a push from the cities to get it.
Low income people are people, both good and bad, just like the rich folk. Screening works.

Habitat-for-Humanity type condominium sounds fine to me, in fact, Tuesday, I’ll bring it up at our planning commission meeting.

TH: Could be time for Henry’s at home instead of expensive beers at the bar. But seriously, it could be time for you to start thinking about ownership. Housing prices are starting to come down again after last summer’s craziness, houses are just sitting on the market, it’s totally a buyer’s market.

Perhaps a house and take on a boarder???

Also, if you buy land, I know where you can get a double wide for free—you move.

Don’t know if it’s still there, but the other day I noticed a house for rent on 6th Street right across from the jail. I know, it’s not a terrific location, but it is downtown. No clue on how much the rent is, tho, or if they allow pets.
