Finally back after my travels. In the last week I have been to Portland, Atlanta, San Antonio, Salt Lake City, and back to Portland. Then from Portland I took a trip to Bend. On the way I stopped in Hood River, The Dalles and Madras. (Don’t ask me why I was in The Dalles on the way to Bend, we’ll just say I took a “wrong turn” and leave it at that)
After staying in Bend for the weekend I drove back to A-town late last night.
As most of you know I spent 3 days in San Antonio at the 2007 Kiwanis convention. The Convention was great. There was lots of training and motivational speeches and lots of free stuff! I got to talk to all the big dogs in the Organization a give them some input.
The City of San Antonio was “less than spectacular” in my view. The strangest thing about the town is that locals can’t handle rain or even the threat of rain. The first 2 1/2 days I was there it was either raining or about to rain and the City was a total ghost town. Shops were either closed all day long, or if not they closed at 6 pm…even bars and restaurants. Another weird thing is that they really don’t celebrate the 4th of July. All of the brouhaha (flags, fireworks, parties etc etc) that we are used to were non-existent in San Antonio. It was just like any other day.
I had quite a few photos, but due to some camera issues many didn’t turn out. On Tuesday night I was trying to catch some lightning on film, so I had my camera settings all set for night photos. Then when I was out taking photos the next 2 days I didn’t realize it was still in the night mode….so most all of them turned out blurry.
One thing that San Antonio has “going for it” is the Riverwalk area. Now I know your picturing a pathway along some kind of river….but you would be wrong. What they call a “river” in San Antonio is really a 20 ft wide and 4 foot deep man-made sludge canal.
This picture is from Friday right before I left, the sun had come out that day and all of a sudden the town was full of people. The little boat thing you see are tour boats that float around town. There has to be 30 of these things flying around the canal. This was the only one that was empty, all the rest were packed with tourists.
The next photo is from a little further down the “River”. There was about a 100 little restaurants that appeared out of no where on Friday, but none of the photos I took of them turned out. When I had walked along the River earlier in the week I had no idea any of them were even there. Then the tables and chairs appeared out of thin air when the sun came out.
Never got a chance much of the “touristy stuff” like the Alamo due to time constraints and the weather closures. If you visit San Antonio, make sure it’s sunny and on a weekend. Also be sure to stay at one of the hotels along the Riverwalk. We stayed at the Holiday Inn-Riverwalk which was a nice Hotel. The Drake Hotel was next door and also looked like a nice place to stay.

It’s supposed to be open. I’m 3 1404, so should be talking pretty early.
It’s great that you’re speaking Tryan, well done.

Glad to hear you had a nice vacation Tryan, and that you were suitably inspired by the motivational Kiwanis speeches, probably encouraging community leadership and public service, I would think, given that the motto is “We Build” – including “We build a better community” – according to one Kiwanis website. You are to be commended for your desire to help your community.
So, since you were back before the 10th, did you go and state your opinions on the LNG issue at the public hearing? If not, will you do so this coming Tuesday?
Hope to see you there.
