Dad's Footlocker ... Part 3

by Walter Richards

1 – A lunchbox that looks like a mail box. It even has Mr Zip on one side. I didn’t care that the other kids had lunchboxes reflecting the latest fads … I had one representing my dad.

2 – A “Mike Love” hat, from when I was in my Beach Boy phase. I admit going a little overboard in “appreciation” of their music. But reality slapped me in the face, when I went to see them in concert at the Western Washington Fair. Old geezers really shouldn’t be dancing on stage with teen cheerleaders. Though I still think they have the perfect summer music.

3 – A pencil sharpener in the shape of a Colt 45 semi-auto pistol. Even though it’s only a couple inches big, a kid would probably face expulsion trying to take it to school today. But I remember taking cap guns to school, so we could play “cops and robbers” during recess.

4 – A note from my Kindergarten teacher, for my first school field trip. It was to see “The Wind in the Willows”, put on by the RA Long Children’s Theatre. Admission was 25 cents. I don’t remember that, but I remember getting in to Saturday children’s matinee at the theater by the Kelso train station for under a dollar. And your ticket number was used for raffle drawings, too.

5 – On a piece of cardboard, at the age of 4 years, 2 months, and 2 weeks … I wrote my name for the first time. Horrendous handwriting, I must say. lol.

Now, there’s a couple things I learned from all these memories.

On the back of pictures, you should write what it’s of and when. Otherwise, you may forget. Your children probably won’t remember … and your grandchildren won’t have a clue why you took the picture. For digital pictures, you can use a paint program to expand the “canvass” and record notes below the picture.

If your kid gets a certificate for something, and it wouldn’t be clear to his/her grandchildren what it was for specifically … make notes on the back of the certificate.

Awards should have a date on them. If they don’t, make a note. It’s the only way to remember which awards were received which year.
