Seaside Resident Josh Lampien Dies in Wreck

by Tryan Hartill

A Seaside-area man died Sunday afternoon when his vehicle crossed the center turn lane and collided head-on with a full-size pickup on Highway 101 just north of Gearhart. The couple in the pickup from Colorado received no apparent injuries.

On June 24, 2007 at approximately 3:40 p.m. a Toyota Celica driven by JOSHUA BRIAN LAMPIEN, age 23, from Seaside, was southbound on Highway 101 near milepost 17 when, for an unknown reason, it drove across the center left turn lane and into the northbound lane where it crashed head-on with a northbound Chevrolet pickup. LAMPIEN was using safety restraints and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The pickup’s driver and passenger who are from Brighton, Colorado were not injured. They are identified as driver BRIAN K. HUNTER, age 29, and passenger ELIZABETH D. HUNTER, age 27. They were using safety restraints and their pickup’s airbags deployed.

Oregon State Police (OSP) troopers from the Astoria Area Command office are completing the investigation with the assistance of an OSP collision reconstructionist. Gearhart Fire Department, ODOT and Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene. Personnel from Seaside Fire Department and Warrenton Fire Department also assisted. The victim reportedly was a volunteer firefighter for Seaside Fire Department. The northbound lane was closed for 3 1/2 hours during the investigation.

Head-Ons are becoming so numerous these days. According to studies by National Highway Safety Council 2 lane highways are to blame for many of these accidents.101 is like the feeders from Portland old and worn-out.When will the legislature wise up we need wider 4 lane roads and to hell with the greedy merchants that block needed progress.

there is no way this coulda been a head on. look at the car, the front end did not get hit. this is a t-bone

That’s what I noticed also Jenny. It looks like Josh made a left turn off of Southbound 101 right in front of the truck.

That car was “T-Boned” at mid-point.

Looked like that truck and car were melded together as one.

Terrible, terrible accident and one would naturally ask how it could have happened so dramatically but the car took to full force of that truck.

What amazed me was that the truck passengers were virtually unharmed?

We were by the accident very shortly after it happened on our way to Camp 18 to pick-up our grand daughter and they were still working the site when we came back by on our way home

Thats a bad stretch of road…ever since they widened that to four lanes there’s been several fatalities between the Gun Club Road intersection and Surf Pines

People, visitors and young folks in a hurry alike, need to realzie that four lanes on a coastal hiway doesnt equal “freeway”. People have got to slow down and be alert always-espceially in busy summer months with so many people out and about turning off and on to the hiway.

I didn’t know Josh but I do know what it’s like to loose loved ones suddenly on the highway. I extend my sympathies and condolences to those who did know and love Josh Lampien. Nothing anyone can say or do to will make things better outside of a hug and a thoughtful word or two. Be thankful for the times you had with Josh and cherish those around you all the more.

yeah he went off the side of the road a little and overcorrected himself, thats why he was T-Boned, not head on. still no matter how it happend it is still VERY SAD and i will always remember him with headphones hanging on his chest lol

Well that would explain it. You get off the right side of the road just a tire width into the gravel and then to get that tire back up onto the paved surface there can be a little lip which holds the car off causing the you to turn more sharply to the left and once that tire is back on the pavement whoosh you’re in the wrong lane. It’s happened to me, I was just fortunate no one was coming the other way.

I was going to be Josh’s sister-in-law and would have loved to have had Josh be the uncle to our kids. I believe Josh would have become a pastor and heard he was singing about wanting to go to heaven last week. I was very touched that I was able to know Josh. He just resently learned that the woman he told me he always wanted to marry- was going to be his wife. I know he pasted knowing she truelly loved him. Josh was also an organ donor and I am sure knowing him- he saved someone else’s life. It is believed that the car Josh was driving hydroplaned in the sudden down pour and it was out of his control. We love you Josh thanks for being a part of our lives!

I want to thank everyone for taking the time to say kind words on Josh’s behalf! Josh was the best son a mother could have! Josh knew and loved the lord! Josh loved brooke…and Josh loved his family! The tribute yesterday was absolutely incredible. I’d like to thank all who helped make that happen! My heart is broken for his loss…..but I do know he is with our father in heaven and he is doing the lords work!

I LOVE YOU JOSH!

I didn’t know Josh very well, only had the chance to meet him a few times, but I am still very sad that he is gone and would like to let Carol and his entire family know that my thoughts and prayers are with you no matter what. When I heard what happened my heart sank. No one should ever be taken at such a young age. Honestly I am still in shock that it even happened. I think about Josh often and wish things had been different so I could have been part of his life. Carol, I am truely sorry.

The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away, and sometimes we wonder why, this is one of those times when that question arises again and again, and although there is no answer right now, we are asured that all will be made clear, stay strong in faith and take comfort in the knowledge that Josh is with his father in Heaven, surrounded by his love, our thoughts and prayers are with all those Josh left behind.
