Went through some old family photos today and I have a few more, but I’ll get this one up first. This photo was taken a couple days after the Peter Iredale washed ashore. This is a scan of the original and if you notice it looks a little different than the more famous version you see in many places. The other one cuts off the guy standing off to the left. Also dark clouds are added and it makes it appear that the ocean is in the back round. But the person who snapped this photo was actually standing in the ocean and took the photo looking East.
You can’t really tell from this scan, but there is a guy standing on board in the middle of the ship. That is my Grandma’s Grandfather William C. Hardie. He had a freight business in Warrenton at the time called Hardie Drayage Service. It was the first of it’s kind in Clatsop County and was started in 1886.
Since he had the only Drayage Service around, he was called in to unload the ship. He considered British money to be worthless, so he took payment for the work by way of some of the goodies on board.
His genealogy traces back to Edward Winslow, who came on the Mayflower from Worcestershire, England.
Another photo taken from the beach.

Doesn’t have any items, but I have one more picture of the ship. This one was taken from the beach, but the angle that the boat sits makes it hard to see much of the destruction. I also have a good story to post about what happened to unidentified corpses. Being the only freight service around, William also had to haul and bury the dead bodies.
Have to wait till after the Budget stuff blows over.

Jolly good! Say, lad, any word on the restoration and refitting project? We heard there is going to be an effort made to refloat the Peter Iredale. Shes not in that bad of shape now, is she Lad? Some elbow grease, a little welding here, some paint there, some new canvas and she’ll be ship shape Bristol in short order, hello what? Yes yes, jolly good.
