{sarcasm} Yeah. Who do the Chinese think they are, not telling us what they’re spending on their military … upgrading their hardware … and not telling us what they’re up to. Why, it’s like they don’t acknowledge that we’re the biggest kid on the block. We’re the only “superpower”, for god’s sake! Who are these barbarian upstarts? {sarcasm off}
C’mon, seriously. China has always asserted itself as one of the “big three”. But some Americans were too focused on the USSR, and ignored China. Now that bird’s coming home to roost.
Oh, the Chinese are getting mobile nuclear launchers? Didn’t we already face that threat from the Soviet Union? Didn’t we learn what to do about it?
And nuclear ballistic submarines? Again, didn’t the Soviets have those? For that matter, don’t we? Has our Navy forgotten how to counter that threat?
Am I saying we should ignore what’s happening with the Chinese military? Of course not. But we’ve already got plans that can be altered to deal with this emerging threat. I’m sure the Chinese are as familiar with the philosophy of M.A.D. as the Soviets were.

Walt, dead on as usual. I am so tired of the naievete of this administration, expecting other countries to just capitulate to these requests when we somehow get other standards.
I am no particular fan of the Chinese government, particularly in light of what they did to Tibet. But governments take power where they can. It’s the nature of the beast. Totally counter to allowing all of us to ever live peacefully, but it is what it is.
