OMG! What do I do?

by Tryan Hartill

So I open up my mail today and there is this Red and White thingy in my box. It says it’s from some “Clerk” in a County called Clatsop.

Clatsop College Directors

Zone 1 Pos. 1

The last time this seat was up for grabs, only the current Director Laura Harris was on the ballot. This year features the same with only Dirk Rohne on the ballot.

Zone 2 Pos. 4

Back in 2003 this was a hotly contested seat. Paul Gillium edged Emily Henderson, John Meyer and John Compere. All 4 recieved at least 20% of the vote. This year Paul is taking on Stephen Berk.

Zone 3 Pos. 6

Last time this seat was up. Marilyn Lane beat out Robert Stricklin 60% to 40%. This year Marilyn is again on the ballot, this time taking on Rand Dufka.

Zone 3 Pos. 7

This one I am still puzzled with. According to the county website, David Shannon won this seat in 2003. He ran un-opposed, but now Larry sparks is on the board in place of him. I’m guessing that he resigned for some reason….anyway for the current election Larry Sparks is taking on Lois DuPey.

I know nothing about any of the candidates and ask for some input from NCO readers to sort it out. Also along the same lines I will be at the debate on Thursday and hopefully get some quotes from the candidates.

Port of Astoria

Position 2

I’m sure everyone around the internet is very familiar with all 3 candidates. Right now I’m leaning toward Patrick McGee or John Dunzer. When it comes to LNG, the only thing that I really feel strongly about is LNG in Warrenton. A really REALLY bad idea in my opinion. And Dunzer is against LNG in Warrenton and he would have to recuse himself on any LNG related votes anyway. I think the Commission needs someone like him to stand up every once and a while and say “What in the hell are you idiots doing?”. But will he be too much of a distraction…..that is the million dollar question.

Position 3

I think Jim Bergeron is a good person and a good Comissioner, if he was running against any of the other 7 candidates I would vote for him. But I am leaning toward Bill Hunsinger as it stands right now. Now the Port suffers from a lack of political diversity. Bill will bring a totally different perspective to the Port. I would also expect him to be as critical to Port Staff as he has been to the Port Commission over the last year.

Position 4

This one is still wide open for me. Ted Thomas and Kathy Sanders both look like good candidates and whoever looks stronger over the next 10 days or so will get my vote. And the fact that everyone is calling Don McDaniel a Libertarian is complete BULLSHIT! Anyone that cuts off public comment or talks openly about “getting tough on drugs” is not a Libertarian!

College

Yes! The current one is junk. This area’s economic engine will come to a halt if workers cannot get adequate training. We are already seeing it now. Many employers have to find employees out of the area because locals don’t have the skills to fill the positions. Yeah it’s another $8 or 10 bucks a month….but it’s worth it!

Dunzer only opposes LNG in Warrenton because he plans to make money off the industry when it is located in Bradwood. Haven’t we had enough Commissioners making money off their positions and insider trading?

And, Dunzer looks a little too much like “Grandpa Munster” for me to be able to vote for him.

Spend 10 or 15 minutes listening to Ted Thomas and you can only arrive at one conclusion.

He is a nut.

Granted, a bright nut, but a nut just the same.

Thanks for the heads up, you guys. This all was helpful in filling out my ballot. Since I’m relatively new here, I don’t know most of these people personally, but I’m sure Slave Hubby will have very strong opinions on the candidates, since he’s always at the County.

I agree on Ted, a pure nut case.

Kathy is my vote!

I see exactly what you are talking about. There is just something about someone barking “You’re a complete dumbass” or “I can’t believe the crap I’m hearing” at a Port Commission meeting, that makes me want to vote for him.

MO3

I hope you wait on filling the ballot out for a couple more days. If all goes as planned I should have audio from tomorrow’s debate in Warrenton. If nothing else wait for the quotes from the College candidates. If the bond passes these people will be in charge of 22 million (60 million really) of our money. And even if it doesn’t pass, they will have to come up with some kind of solution for fixing the current college.

Bunny and “Davey”

This morning’s interview with Kathy on the radio was fairly good. It for sure pushed me closer to filling in the circle by her name.
