Sundown on the River

by Tryan Hartill

Anyone have any idea who owns the old building out over the water and what they are planning to do with it? And what would you do with it if you owned it?

Royal Nebeker, artist, art teacher and international bon viant, and his wife Sarah own the old netloft building. I think they have it with the idea of renting out studio space or something like that.

What would I do if I owned it? Make damn sure the insurance is always current.
It’s somewhat amazing that it still stands-a testament to it’s original quality construction and the Nebekers’ efforts on strengthening what was there. This past winter was a windy one, one night’s gusts were well over 100mph on the river and those are the kind of nights that kill old buildings like that. How many more years it can stand is anyones guess, but those old sheds have a lifespan and I’d bet that one is making it on borrowed time.
I remember the buliding like it that sat at Smith Point. It didn’t so much as blow down one wild winter’s night around 1980-81 or so, it was more like it exploded.

Yes, he owns it and as far as I understand it is a night mare. The only reason the building still stands is that it is supported by Royal’s massive ego.

Interestingly, that building has mooring opportunities that go with it and its bones are really no worse than the “”Docks On 12th Street” (The old Astoria Marine Supply” building and the current home of “Baked Alaska” and Dentist, Joe Shawa’s office), in my view.

That building has always intrigued me as well and for years I have been wanting to do a painting of it. I may have to do it soon before it gets ‘condo-fied’ or yupped-up somehow. I suppose it depends on how strapped for cash that Nebekezer guy is.

Those pilings and other things (or whatever y’all call them) sticking up out of the water look so weird to someone who doesn’t see them. They make for an interesting photograph, most definitely. Good thing you don’t live down here, TH, or you’d kick my ass in the photography competitions. :P

Hmmmmm….That has me thinking….wonder if it’s too late to sign-up for the Linn County Fair….

Speaking of Fair, do you realize we have a new Fair Manager and there hasn’t been a peep about him in the paper or any other media. How come we only hear about Fair Managers when they leave their positions?

What happened to Angela?

Angela? Wow, you go through them, don’t you?

Your photos seem to be generating lots of interesting comments and you are turning out to be pretty good with the camera these days.

Of course you are no “Jaggy Speilberg” from Lebanon.

Yet!!!

AUNTIE! LOL!!! OMG, LOL!

If I lived so near the water, I’d be out there every day. Alas, I’m stuck on the land and take pictures and movies of less interesting things.

If anyone cares, I’ve updated my most recent movie with a different song and some other pictures. Enjoy!

“Jaggy Spielberg”—LOL!!!

Just figured it was another one of your girls, Golf Boy!

You are right, she was probably talking about Sidlo.

Auntie I have no girls…otherwise I wouldn’t be sitting at home alone with my dog 6-7 nights a week!

Poor TH !

He doesn’t sit there totally alone… he’s IMing me while he’s sitting there. Sorry I’m no company for you, TH. For that, you get another pin in the head.

Jaggy, I think you need to visit again – sans ‘chaperone’.

That would perk TH up, I am certain. If your mom asks, tell her that some lady named Auntie will be your chaperone and I will leave you two on your own :)

19 On May 3, 10:36 am, Jaggy wrote:

I only had a chaperon for the first meeting over dinner. I was completely alone with TH for several hours the following day. Details? We aren’t telling. :P

Angela didn’t want a 24/7/365 job. She left last fall and the new guy has been there over a month. I hope the Fair board lets him do his job and doesn’t micromanage like they so often do.

I’m too lazy to open my email to write you Tryan and you don’t have a FAQ page so I’m posting here. How come come the pics related to the blog role don’t update to the latest ones? How come you say some are new posts but don’t say when others are? Just wondering. I love the look of your page and appreciate your work. I’ve been trying to keep my blog updated so I was wondering if you have your Clatsop Blog Network set on auto or do you check on the blogs and update it?

And yes, Tryan and Guy, I meant Angela Sidlo.

I know I have been slacking off…I have not had much gumption for updating my site much. I am finally getting the audio posts for the Port up tonight and I need to do a post/pictures/interview for the Pioneer House garage sale, which is coming up Memorial Day…..

I have to go through and do it all, there is no auto. The screen camera that I took the pictures with expired and I have not looked for a new one that I could do another “free trail” with. I didn’t think anyone even looked at those much anymore.

I’ll try to put a little more time in the next week or so and maybe find some new gizmos and gadgets.

The most interesting collection of color combos was in a brochure entitled ‘The Pacific Northwest’. It included a fabulous photo of this very building with dozens of seagulls sitting on the footbridge handrail . Thats big time stuff!

The Uppertown Station is a symol of this gain. Strong, enduring and right out there in the public sphere are some of the characteristics of the people that built it.
In it’s prsent condition after the hurricane of 2007 one wonders about it’s future.Maybe its very existence should be enough for people to think about the imortance of resistence to oppersion and exploitation and how important it is to stand up and say “No!”..

I worked in the net-barn of R.Nebeker’s for the last three years as an artist using the space as studio and workshop.
