Notes from the Port Debate

by Tryan Hartill

For sure a wide variety of candidates on the ballot this May. 8 were there for the debate and Jim Bergeron was absent because of a Ocean policy Meeting in Reedsport. Also notable was the disappearance of Jim Stroup. Not sure what happened, but it looked as if he got up to go to the bathroom and never came back after the first questions were answered.

On to the winners and losers. The ones who looked the best to me were, in no particular order….Patrick McGee, Bill Hunsinger, Kathy Sanders and Ted Thomas. McDaniel and Bjork know they are right on every issue and while I admire their “decisiveness”, this attitude seems to be what got them in recent legal troubles. Also noticeable was how “anti” Bjork was. From container ships, to Longshoremen, to the rail system, he didn’t think any were particularly good ideas. But made it clear that he might support them if the perfect circumstances arise.

Dunzer was typical Dunzer, making a lot of good points, but really having no idea how to get them across to the voters. And he also repeated many times that it would be very dangerous for anyone to vote for him. I think the phrase “right ideas, but a loose cannon” sums him up.

This is all still just round one of the debates, plus so much more can happen out of the public eye.

District 2

Bjork seems to have the upper hand, with McGee having an outside chance with a hard-charging campaign. Dunzer will get his usual 10% of the vote, leaving the other 2 to fight for the remaining 90%.

District 3

A virtual toss-up with Hunsinger having a slight edge.

District 4

Sanders and Thomas seem somewhat similar in their ideas and ways to improve the Port and I think both would make excellent Commissioners. But I’d say neither can win if they both stay in the race. And even then, they both are recent transplants, which is tough in a small area like this. Stroup didn’t stick around long enough to let people know why they should vote for him, but I bet he will garner 10% of the vote and even if Thomas or Sanders drop out, that will be enough to give McDaniel a “50%” victory.

One of my favorite statements by Mr. McDaniel was on the question of his top three Port “priorities.”

McDaniel’s first priority, he said, was “resolving complex pollution issues.”

He then said that his second highest priority will be to clear up the public’s “misperceptions” regarding the Port commission’s activities.

In my view, this is a person who has not apologized for any of the wrong (or at the very least ill-considered) behaviors and decisions, and has no intention to, because he is certain that the public just “perceives” wrongly that there were mistakes and malfeasance.

How could he clear up this misperception, if it exists? I would think by allowing a full independent audit and review of all of the Port books and records.

Yet he sits on all of the information that could clear up the misperceptions. (If there is any.)

Tell me, if there was some way to clarify the alleged misperceptions, would he not have already released that information? It certainly is in his best interest to do so before the election, not after, isn’t it?

And another thing – is he really saying that we misperceive everything to do with his commission’s work? If they made no mistakes, why did they recently change (again) the public comment rules? Why did Mr. Taggart have to resign? Why did they fire Mr. Gearin? And most of all – why are there investigations underway?

Please Mr. McDaniel, we can’t wait until after the election to have you clear up these alleged misperceptions. If you can – do it now.

I didn’t “have” to resign.
I chose to resign.
I’d been there 13 years.

I want to move on to other things. I had been pondering a run for county commission and wanted to take a break before doing so. Since then, life has taken another turn and I have went to work for another company and we are very busy (to say the least). So more than likely, I won’t be running for office anytime soon.

Now get that smile off your face.

Hope this helps.

Or perhaps a company that specializes in the removal of black mold from buildings, I hope?
