- Stock markets all over the world take a tumble over home loan defaults in the U.S.
- BizJournals calculates the most affordable and the least affordable places to live. Portland is 71st out of the largest 100 cities and Seattle is 79th. San Francisco is of course the 100th.
Oregon
- Bill in the Oregon House would “Study” Alternative to abortion Organizations. I’m Pro-choice and still scratching my head at this one.
- Larry George introduces a bill that says all Federal owned land in Oregon belongs to the State. Sounds good in theory, but good luck!
Local
- The Feds approve 1 million in disaster loans for the winter storms in Northwest Oregon. Although it only is for “loss of income” and not “property damage”. But what if you sell firewood and this happens to your property…..hmmmmm a tricky one!
- The Feds push for aquaculture 3 miles off of coastlines. I’m guessing some of these will pop up off the Coast of Oregon….mainly halibut and possibly black cod.
- The Zebra Mussel has folks on high alert along the Columbia River. These little fellas invade river systems and would be bad news for salmon.

Larry George is correct. Look it up in the Oregon and Federal Constitutions. There are very specific instances in the Federal Constitution when the federal gov’t can own land. And when Oregon was granted statehood, the state boundaries were defined … and I see nothing about all this federal land the feds claim they “own”.
In fact, the federal agencies that claim to “own” the land are themselves unConstitutional.
Now, will it succeed? IF the state is willing to give up ALL federal funds. Because that’s what the feds are going to threaten. “You can have the land or the money, but not both.” Stupid politicians will accept the money, of course. In the long term, it would be best to have the land. But politicians, like most people, seldom think in terms of the long run.
