Yes it is weak because it has been a very slow news day and I had to reach to the bottom of the barrel for these stories…...

You’ll notice I said banks have to have a SSN/TIN. Meaning you have to have either a SS# – or a Taxpayer Identification Number. A TIN is also 9 digits, and can be used in the SS# space on forms … but is from the IRS rather than the SSA.
If someone wants to claim their kid as a dependent, but doesn’t want to get a SSN – they have to get a TIN.
You don’t need both, because the IRS uses your SSN as your TIN.
Both of which are different from an EIN, or Employer Identification Number.

RE: Bank of America.
I don’t understand how a bank can legally open an account for someone without a SS# or TI#.
Banks are required to report your earnings to the feds each year. That 1099 form you get for your interest? That has to have a SSN/TIN on it.
They’re also required to report any transaction above a certain dollar figure, thanks to the “war on drugs”. I bet that report is supposed to include the person’s SSN/TIN.
IIRC, they’re also forbidden from giving loans to people without SSN/TINs.
Of course, these laws are federal … and since the feds don’t care about enforcing our immigration laws … don’t hold your breath waiting for a federal investigation into the bank’s practices.
But it’s another issue that makes one wonder why, if the feds aren’t enforcing immigration laws, they still have ICE.
