New York City symbolically banned use of the word nigger on Wednesday….The City Council unanimously declared a moratorium that carries no penalty but aims to stop youth from casually using the word, considered by most Americans to be the most offensive in the English language.
The New York City measure follows similar resolutions this month by the New York state assembly and state senate, and supporters of the ban are taking their campaign to The Recording Academy, asking it not to nominate musicians for Grammy awards if they use the word in their lyrics.
“This could be the beginning of a movement,” councilman Albert Vann said.
Could be…yes….chances are no….
Oregon Sen. Gordon Smith wants to increase federal cigarette taxes to expand children’s health insurance. If approved, his plan to raise the tax as much as 60 cents a pack could couple with a proposed state increase to leave smokers paying an extra $1.45 a pack to light up…..
The federal State Children’s Health Insurance Program distributes money to states, which match the money and insure children from families whose income is less than 200 percent of the poverty level, or $27,380 for a family of two. But the National Governors Association said that 14 states don’t receive enough money to fully fund that obligation.
Smith wants all of those children covered. And as Kulongoski proposed for Oregon, he wants to expand coverage to as much as 300 percent of the poverty level, or $41,070 for a family of two. Smith also wants to cover pregnant women who meet the criteria and adjust the program with inflation.
With a Dem majority in D.C. I’d say this has a very good chance of passing…..Although I’d put a Bush Veto at 50/50.
Oregon vineyards grew, and wineries crushed, more grapes than ever last year. A new report from the US Department of Agriculture says the state had the highest yield in a decade….. The report says rapid growth in the state’s wine industry created problems for many wineries. Limited storage capacity made it hard to keep up with demand. And complex interstate mail order regulations were a headache for wine producers.
Still, case sales were up by 2% over 2005 to $1.63 million. The industry has more than doubled its size in the last decade.
The rise in Wine production runs parallel to the Oregon Micro brew business, which is also rising in sales year after year. Of course we all know what’s next…better start taxing those wine drinkers as well….
HB 2347 increases tax on wines, malt beverages and cider. Dedicates tax moneys to funding alcohol and drug abuse treatment and prevention and mental health treatment. Applies to tax reporting periods beginning on or after January 1, 2008…..
So many tax increases coming out of Salem these days that it’s hard to keep track!
So is this thing going to be self-sustaining like proposed?
With only 17 people there and 30 beds available, will more Transition Center residents help or hurt the bottom line?

Well eventually the Dems in D.C. would probably propose it, but as it stands right now it’s Gordo that is pushing it.
And as far as the size of Government programs go…Since the Republicans have been in charge in D.C. the Federal Budget has risen 33% while inflation over the last six years is about 18%.
Both parties want larger Government and more programs if you look at their voting records. One says they don’t and one says they do. The 2 party system works perfect for the ones in charge and less than perfect for your everyday citizen.

I only drink French as a semi-rule. French is best. However, that being said, I did have some ‘Cali-vin’ a couple of months ago that totally rocked my world. It was called Hayman & Hill Shiraz-Viognier 2002. You must find.
Hell, I must find – it will be the end of Lent before I know it.

Perhaps the Transition Center is in trouble because they are much more concerned about getting “revenue” than either providing services or protecting the non-criminals. Most people doing jail time are convicted of misdemeanors and if what’s being spoon-fed to Freel is true apparently no one is much interested in providing them with services because they aren’t cash cows.

1 – “most” Americans? I doubt anyone has done any polling on the issue. Given the frequency of its use by various artists, most of whom are “black”, seems to me the “black” community only views it as “offensive” if said by a non-negroid.
2 – Naive dreams, thinking it will stop (or even slow) casual use by youth when there’s no punishment attached. Chances are that it will actually increase use by the “anti-establishment” youth, especially if they’re negroid.
NOTE: You may object to my using the term “negroid”, but I don’t care. That’s the correct term, just as “caucasian” is for “white” or “mongoloid” is for certain asians. I’ve had it with this PC crap.

When I saw the Daily Astorian use an MSNBC story on their front page (the one with the dog whelping a cat or some such thing) I thought, “There’s no other news locally so you have to do a fill in article with this?” I guess a cute story, you can see how much of it I remember, but front page of our one and only local daily?
Thank-you Tryan for the round-up locally! Can you just imagine if we had four people doing Tryan’s job (maybe even for a salary?) what sort of local online newsjournal we could have?
Walter, your sad. Really. So your tired of being PC? Your tired of creating atmosphere’s conducive to civil behavior, promoting educational and economic growth, preserving the mental and physical health of a multitude of races, traditions and cultures less fortune than yours? LOL! So be it, your too weak to hold up your end of the bargain, anyways. You call to yourself what you send out from yourself.
Negroid may or may not be the correct term, as can be said for bovine excrement.
Your articles are like you are Washington’s own little National Inquirer reporter, ever on the look out for the slimey side of the human personality and calling it “the truth.” Grasping hold of the elephant’s tail and calling it a rope doesn’t make it one.
Wasn’t that a nice, un PC way to talk with one another? Sure got things [not] resolved and now the flow of information and the health of online communication will just [not] be ever so much better!
Having differing points of view are necessary, growth is only possible through the exploration of others’ viewpoints and a constant willingness to challenge your own perceptions. IMHO. I think people like Walter (no matter their imagined biological construction, which is what negroid and caucasion refer to), while I’ll defend with my life their right to speak, truly are the epitomy of the meaning of what happens when a certain typification/classification (whether socialogical, biological or economical) of people feel their status quo is challenged.
“The notion that humankind can be divided along White, Black, and Yellow lines reveals the social rather than the scientific origin of race. The idea that there exist three races, and that these races are “Caucasoid,” “Negroid,” and “Mongoloid,” is rooted in the European imagination of the Middle Ages, which encompassed only Europe, Africa, and the Near East.. . Nevertheless, the history of science has long been the history of failed efforts to justify these social beliefs. Along the way, various minds tried to fashion practical human typologies along the following physical axes: skin color, hair texture, facial angle, jaw size, cranial capacity, brain mass, frontal lobe mass, brain surface fissures and convolutions, and even body lice. As one scholar notes, ”[t]he nineteenth century was a period of exhaustive and, as it turned out, futile search for criteria to define and describe race differences.”. . . Attempts to define racial categories by physical attributes ultimately failed. By 1871, some leading intellectuals had recognized that even using the word “race” “was virtually a confession of ignorance or evil intent.” The genetic studies of the last few decades have only added more nails to the coffin of biological race. Evidence shows that those features usually coded to race, for example, stature, skin color, hair texture, and facial structure, do not correlate strongly with genetic variation. . . The rejection of race in science is now almost complete. In the end, we should embrace historian Barbara Fields’s succinct conclusion with respect to the plausibility of biological races: “Anyone who continues to believe in race as a physical attribute of individuals, despite the now commonplace disclaimers of biologists and geneticists, might as well also believe that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the tooth fairy are real, and that the earth stands still while the sun moves.” Ian F. Haney Lopez, The Social Construction of Race: Some Observations on Illusion, Fabrication, and Choice, 29 Harvard Civil Rights, Civil Liberties Law Review 1-62, 6-7, 11-17 (Winter, 1994)

None of that has anything to do with being PC. Being PC is being afraid to say/do anything that might be offensive to anyone, no matter how ridiculous their demand not to be offended. If the Founders had been PC, there wouldn’t have been a First Amendment freedom of speech.
Being PC means that the only … and I mean ONLY … way to “preserve cultures” is to hold those cultures separate, rather than meld with the rest of society. America was once a “melting pot”, but no longer because we have to keep those cultures separate.
Being PC means a society of victims. Everybody is a victim. Except male caucasians, because they’re the ones keeping everybody else victimized. If you’re gang raped by a bunch of crips, it’s because of their “environment” – not because they’re a bunch of punks. Or maybe they were just copying what they saw in a movie, and didn’t know better.
Being PC means “zero tolerance”. The idiocy where a keychain can be a weapon because it has a less-than-1 inch chain on it. Or where nail clippers are possible weapons. Or where kindergarteners get in trouble for using their fingers as “guns” when playing.
Being PC has nothing to do with “civil behavior”. It has to do with “politically correct behavior”.

btw Carrie – you can quote all the articles you want about there not being races … but try describing someone without referencing what race they are. You can, but it leaves a lot more possible matches. It would be like describing someone without mentioning gender. It’s another tool to narrow down the possible matches, or group.
