This is Michael Desmond, news director for KAST 1370 AM. No, there is no Betty Ford Clinic in Arizona—I called to check. If you want to know where the mayor went, he told me you can call him and ask him yourself. If you look at where the Daily Astorian got its information, you’ll notice they never talked to Willis, but got the location from someone else. Willis has never publicly disclosed where he went to get his treatment, but if you’ve seen him since his return, you can tell he looks much better and has made positive changes in his life.
And, just so you know, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (commonly referred to as HIPAA (HIP uh), prohibits clinics like Betty Ford from revealing anything to the press about who or who is not checked in, what kind of treatment they’re undergoing, etc. Most of Willis’ (and yours and mine, for that matter) health information is private, and, unless he chooses to make public where he went for treatment, and what form that treatment took, the press doesn’t have a right to that information.
All that being said, the mayor never covered anything up- he just never spoke publicly about where he went, which is certainly within his rights. If you have concerns about his decision not to reveal this information in public, you can call Willis yourself and I’m sure he will be as responsive with you as he was with me.
