Not-so-Breaking News...Van Dusen gets 1 year suspension

by Tryan Hartill

From the Daily A:

The Department of Motor Vehicles has affirmed an order suspending the driver’s license of Astoria Mayor Willis Van Dusen for one year.
Van Dusen’s license was suspended following his Sept. 4 arrest on a charge of driving under the influence of intoxicants. Van Dusen collided with a vehicle at 17th Street and Irving Avenue while riding his motorcycle.
He had challenged the suspension at a hearing Monday conducted by a DMV administrative law judge, where details of the crash and its aftermath were described by an Oregon State Police trooper who helped investigate the incident. The judge issued his ruling upholding the suspension Friday.

I think everyone saw this coming, it is pretty much known that if you refuse a alcohol test will on a public road it’s a automatic one year suspension.

I think Van Dusen is a good Mayor, but this whole deal is going to get even bigger as the election gets closer. Portland news will be all over this race for the “shock value”. “OMG! Guy gets a DUII and wins in a landslide a month later! Who are these oddballs out in Astoria anyway?”

Who is the “Astoria Citizens Alliance” and what do these signs that say “Four More Years of Willis Won’t Kill Us mean? May not kill us but might kill somebody!

Marsha Fenske made a valid point the other night at the “Candidates Forum”.

She said(Paraphrasing):”The Mayor has been cited three times over a ten year for DUII but, how many other times has he put himself and fellow Astorians and others at risk by this same abuse?”

And then I read the other person involved in the accident was approached by this same man

Sorry for the incomplete post.

And then I read the other person involved in the accident was approached by this man and was asked not to call the police?

The media also says, “The Mayor of Astoria, Oregon refused to cooperate with the authorities?

And then 30 days more or less at “Betty Ford Clinic”?

What magic does that place have that can send a person with many, many years of obvious substance abuse, presumably, fresh and ready to continue in a very visible leadership capacity and not be looked at by all, in this important time of new growth with much skepticism and non-confidence.

I personally see it as just another load of “Bovine Scat” and Willis really needs to do some serious soul searching here and not just in his interest but, in consideration of every citizen he was elected to serve.

I appreciate Willis’ love for Astoria but, I love it as well and so do the rest of you.

It’s a rare and special place but, won’t be for long with this kind of visible weakness and as we can already see will leave us open to all the dirty schemes and businesses that have already tried to exploit our desperation.

Drug and substance abuse in our community?

We’re already in the midst of an epidemic that seems to be totally out of control as I have been an involved witness to over the last seven or so years and it really doesn’t appear to be gettting any better and now to condone this conduct in such a visible leader?

Is this the example we choose to prosper to those we wish to encourage to stay here and get involved in our future?

As a citizen of Astoria or “The Community” as a whole, is this OK with you?

Note or your ballot and under every candidates name there are the words Write-In” if you can’t find a candidate you like.

Use it, but do not under any circumstances “Not Vote”.

Kharma will deal with “The Mayor” in the end.

Write in anybody, but write in Cindy Price on Commissioner since Lee actually has to still run again. His name is alone but there is a spot for “Write-In” under every race.

I say write-in Tryan Hartill.

The word might be out. I’ve had a few people ask me how to spell my name and tell me they were going to write me in. I figure I’ve got about 12 votes! Wonder how many you need to be mentioned in the paper for 4th place?

I say declare yourself to those that feel they have no choice but to vote for Van Dusen upon review of his competition.

Seems to be a standard Van Dusen “machine” tactic every election but, as they say that’s politics and no disrespect to those that have, under whatever circumstances, stepped up to the plate to even pretend to challenge him.

I’d vote for you Tryan but I already voted for myself on that one.

You think if Van Dusen wins he will step down and try to maneuver his buddy Blair Henningsgaard into the top spot?

Rumor has it Henningsgaard is the intended successor to Van Dusen.

Kind of like a local “Star Chamber” Electoral College ain’t it?

Patrick you can’t write in yourself!!!

You might as well run for Mayor if your going to do that….oh that reminds me what happened to your better half…thought she was going for the bigtime??

I was going to write-in Eleanor Roosevelt like last time but, I figured what the heck plus I had already filled out my ballot before I thought of you.

Can’t tell you how many people have asked me how to spell your name though.

That is spelled M-C-G-E-E isn’t it?

K.C.’s way too busy.

Yep.

Spelled M-c-G-e-e…I should know I just wrote it on my ballot. Although I forgot to write a capital “G”.

Elections probably won’t count it anyway.

Now you’re getting ready to open up another can of worms.

Wonder how many ballots conveniently go missing or unexplicably are over voted when the need arises?

Kind of hard to manipulate an undervote or, wait!, an undervote leaves a blank dot to fill in for a much needed vote when the need arises.

Hmmmmmmmmmm!

You think this is why we can pretty much predict, by his/her closeness to certain agendas, who will likely win an election around these parts well before the ballots are finally counted?

I’d almost say the safest bet to make sure your vote will be close to being counted properly is to hand deliver it directly to the elections office and ask for a receipt that you actually delivered your ballot to them.

15 On Oct 26, 11:25 am, Walter Richards wrote:

Sorry, Patrick … but all that does is confirm you handed them the envelope.

The only sure way to know that your vote was counted, was if there was a record of who voted how/for whom. And that would violate the “ballot secrecy” principle, wouldn’t it?

As it stands now, there’s NO way to make sure your vote for Candidate Z didn’t go to Candidate X.

btw – I’m all in favor of doing away with parts of the “ballot secrecy”. I should be able to go down to the elections office, after the votes are counted, and see a record of how MY vote was counted. An audit would easily show if those individual records tied to the official tallies. It would also make it a simple process to discard any illegal votes, even if you didn’t know which envelope they came out of.

I also favor using biometrics (IE; fingerprints) to guarantee only legal votes.

At least you they know you know they know.

My point exactly.

Now, what if everybody did it?

Walter…..Aren’t all those post-election data and results available to the public anyway.

Could one not submit a FOIA request?
