A few months ago members of the Builders Club went to Doernbecher Children’s hospital in Portland, to visit with fellow kids that were there for treatment.
One of the things they remember from their visit is the “Red Wagon”. This is what the kids receive when they leave the hospital, a brand new red wagon overflowing with take home gifts. It is known around the hospital that if one of the kids is pulling a red wagon around, it means they are on their way home. Members of the Builders Club happened to be there when one of the kids was proudly pulling one around the hospital on his way out the door. From then on the Club wanted to raise money for kids at the hospital.
PNW Kiwanis (Our Chapter includes Alaska and British Columbia as well…) got involved with Doernbecher many years ago to help kids in need. When we started, kids had 80% chance of not making it if they were admitted for cancer. Since then we started investing money into hospital and it has paid off in a big way. Now kids have a 90% chance of coming out alive. Now 6 full-time researchers are funded by Kiwanis at DCH, (they work for half the pay as they could get elsewhere) that do nothing but child pediatric cancer research.
Even though the Hospital is many miles away, many members of our community must travel there for treatment. Last year over 180 kids from Clatsop County spent time there getting medical care, as it is one of the premier kids hospitals on the west coast.
This is the only money that the Astoria-Warrenton Kiwanis sends out of the County. (9-11, Tsunami and Katrina money was also sent, but announced at the fundraisers) All other monies are spent in the Astoria-Warrenton area, as the Kiwanis members pay all of the fees to the Organization itself.
This will be the second movie night for the Warrenton group. The first raised close to 300 bucks for kids at DCH.
The next go-a-round is Friday night 7 PM at WGS.
This is truly a family event, there will a babysitting room for the very young ones and snacks available during the show. The show is free for all family members and there will be a donation box and all money will go straight to the kids at DCH.
A good show for a good cause.
Thanks again to all that help Kiwanis and other local Service Clubs!
