On April 3, 2006 at approximately 9:00 a.m., a 1990 Lincoln Continental four-door driven by DIEGO A. COLIN, age 18, from Seaside, was southbound on Highway 101 near Turlay Lane at about milepost 11. Witnesses told OSP troopers that the Lincoln was being driven at a high rate of speed when it crossed the centerline and sideswiped the drivers’ side of a 1984 Peterbilt cement truck driven by GERALD C. ZWEBER, age 50, from Astoria.
After impact with the cement truck, the Lincoln rotated sideways into the northbound lane and was struck on the driver’s side by a northbound 1997 Mercury Cougar two-door driven by ERIN E. LABOR, age 22, from Astoria.
COLIN was transported by Medix ambulance to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria where he was pronounced deceased. Troopers believe he was using safety restraints and the vehicle’s airbag did deploy.
ZWEBER had minor injuries but did not require medical transport to a hospital.
LABOR and her daughter were transported to the Seaside area hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Her daughter, age 4 months, was in a child safety seat. LABOR was using safety restraints and her vehicle’s airbag deployed.
OSP troopers from the Astoria Area Command are continuing the investigation. Clatsop County Sheriff’s Office, Warrenton Fire Department, Medix, and ODOT assisted at the scene. All lanes were reopened about 12:30 p.m.
