Let's not raise property taxes

by Tryan Hartill

Many years ago the City of Ashland passed a restaurant tax to pay for services.
This tax was a flat 5% on all food sold in restaurants, with a few exceptions.

Now Grants Pass has sent a similar idea to the voters. In May they will decide if they want to impose a 4 point some odd tax on restaurant food to pay for school activities and drug programs, that would otherwise be paid for by raising property taxes.

I don’t see any reason why the County as a whole couldn’t impose the same. Sure much of the dollars would come from locals, but a huge % would come from visitors. And it’s not like they are going to stop in Clatskanie or Tillamook to eat just because they must pay a 4% tax in Clatsop County. And if they go to Pacific county they would have to pay double.

I would admit that I would pay more than my fair share of this tax and it would mean more more accounting for my employer, but I would see it as being worth it in the longrun because we would at least get a few more tourist dollars to help pay for services. And we could keep more of our property tax dollars in our pockets.

The current tax structure sends so much of our money out of the county, that our schools are going to suffer much more than they are now, if nothing is done in Salem and odds are they want do a damn thing.

The Schooner and Baked Alaska are already doing it, we know they would help push it.

Jeff, Cindy, others…

Read my lips, no new taxes.

You say ONLY 5%? Let’s take 5% of your check and see how you react.

I’m not Jeff or Cindy but you get my 2 cents anyway.

Taxing only restaurants to pay for whatever the county issue of the day, is unfair and too taxing to a few businesses. Keeep in mind that small business is already overtaxed in Oregon and it is tough enough for them to get by as it is.

Just say no to this tax.

Just starting some dialog.

But you are not correct on over-taxing, Oregon is ranked 37th in taxes.

The issue is our tax money is pulled out of our county and given to other counties, this just can’t last. None of our Reps will even discuss it, so you know it is not going to change.
